Sedation dentistry is a great way to make your next dental appointment feel like a dream instead of a nightmare. Sedation dentistry allows our patients to get dental procedures without any fear or anxiety. Here at Centre Dentaire Aoude NDG, we offer various sedation options, including laughing gas and oral sedatives, all safe and effective ways to help you relax during your next dental visit.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Dental phobia is a very real thing, and it affects millions of Americans. According to the American Dental Association, about 35% of Americans suffer from dental anxiety and avoid going to the dentist. In reality, many people would benefit from sedation dentistry but don’t realize it.

Sedation dentistry is when a patient is given medication to help them relax during a dental procedure. There are different types of sedation, each with its benefits and drawbacks. Let’s look at the most common types of sedation dentistry so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Laughing Gas

The first and most common type of sedation dentistry is nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is a gas inhaled through a face mask that goes over your nose. It helps you relax and ease any anxiety you might feel about your dental procedure.

One of the main benefits of nitrous oxide is that it takes effect very quickly—within just a few minutes—and wears off just as quickly once the procedure is over. That means you’ll be able to drive home after your appointment without any problems.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Another type of sedation dentistry is oral conscious sedation. This involves taking a pill before your appointment; the medication will make you drowsy but won’t put you to sleep. You’ll be awake throughout the procedure, but you likely won’t remember it afterward.

Oral conscious sedation is a good option for people who are mildly anxious about going to the dentist or need a longer or more invasive procedure.

IV Sedation

The last type of sedation dentistry is IV sedation, sometimes called general anesthesia. IV sedation involves having medication administered through an IV directly into your bloodstream. IV sedation will put you into a deep sleep during your dental procedure so that you won’t be aware of anything happening around you.

This type of sedation is usually used for people with severe dental anxiety or who must have multiple procedures done simultaneously. It is also a common choice for more complex treatments, such as root canal surgeries and wisdom teeth removal cases.

If you have ever felt anxious or nervous about going to the dentist, then sedation dentistry might be right. Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Different types of sedation are available, and your dentist will work with you to determine which type is best for you based on your level of anxiety and your medical history.
